South Africa

The Fundimvelo Thula Thula Rhino Orphanage (FTTRO) is the first purpose built rhino orphanage facility in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

Run by the world renowned Lawrence Anthony Earth Organisation and housed in the Thula Thula Game reserve, FTTRO was the brain child of Lawrence himself.

In 2001 two rhino orphans, named Thabo (male) and Ntombi (female) were translocated to Thula Thula following their rescue and initial care. Under the loving and dedicated care of the Thula Thula staff, the two rhino orphans were successfully raised and released back into the reserve , allowing them to live a natural life in their natural habitat.

The process was not a simple one, and the risks of raising rhinos in the middle of the worst poaching crisis in history became a reality when poachers struck one night. Thankfully the poaching attempt failed, although Thabo was shot in the leg and it took him around one year to fully recover.

The experience of raising Thabo and Ntombi convinced Lawrence and his team that there was an urgent need for a purpose built, dedicated rhino orphanage, and in 2015 the Fundimvelo Thula Thula Rhino Orphanage was ready for operation.

It was a bittersweet moment as everyone involved would wish for nothing more than the facility to stand empty due to a halt to the poaching and no more orphaned calves. But in reality FTTRO will be looking to expand its capacity before it closes its doors.

With the first intake of rhino orphans now being cared for by the FTTRO team, Helping Rhinos is proud to be supporting them by providing financial support and raising international awareness.

We are also proud to exclusively offer you the chance to adopt one of the rhino orphans at Fundimvelo Thula Thula Rhino Orphanage. Click here to see how you can make a difference to one of the rhino orphans.

The Fundimvelo Rhino Orphange was made possible thanks to a generous donation from Four Paws.
