Sudan was a superstar whose death was mourned around the world -environmentalists, conservationists, indeed everyone who recognised the significance of Sudan as the very last male northern white rhino, was saddened by his passing. He died on 19th March 2018, from age related diseases, aged 45 – more than 100 in human equivalent years.
Helping Rhinos and Ol Pejeta Conservancy - where Sudan was cared for and where the last two female northern white rhino still reside - approached internationally renowned wildlife artist Karen Laurence-Rowe to capture Sudan on canvas, his character, his power and prehistoric magnificence in a painting that would endure as a lasting memory of a much-loved rhino.
Karen, who spent many hours studying and sketching rhino on Ol Pejeta was incredibly moved by Sudan. ‘When Sudan died, I was profoundly and deeply saddened ... for his carers who will have felt the loss so very deeply, for the planet that has pretty much lost yet another species and, for mankind who has yet to see the errors of his ways.’

‘I don’t know if we will ever see another male northern white rhino walk this earth again,’ commented Karen, ‘and I can only wish the vet teams on Ol Pejeta Conservancy and beyond every success with their ongoing scientific research into IVF. I do know however, that I am moved to continue the fight in protecting the rest of the rhino species and truly hope that the loss of this gentle soul will move others in the same way.’
Richard Vigne, CEO of Ol Pejeta, commented, ‘I do hope Sudan will live on in our hearts, his legacy to act as a constant reminder of the fragility of the planet and I commend this stunning artwork to everyone who wants a truly wonderful memory to cherish and who want to help make a difference.
