Nandi

Species: black rhino

Gender: female

Born: August 2015

Nandi's mum was killed by poachers.  It was several days after the death of her mum before little Nandi was found by rescuers.  She was transported by a special rhino ambulance to the Fundimvelo Thula Thula Rhino orphanage where the dedicated team got to work stabilising her condition.  The goal of the Nandi's carers, is to make her strong enough to be returned back to the wild.

Storm

Species: black rhino

Gender: male

Born: September 2015

Storm got his name from the awful weather conditions on the day he was rescued.  The rescue team battled through an almighty wind and rain storm to get the little orphaned rhino back to care facility.

Storm had a difficult start at the orphanage with a number of infections, for quite a while it seemed like he would not survive. But thanks to the skill and dedication of his carers Storm did survive, and is getting stronger by the day.

Makhosi

Species: white rhino

Gender: female

Born: early 2017

This tiny little female white rhino calf was rescued when rangers noticed that at two days after her birth, her weight had dropped dramatically, and she was noticeably weaker. With careful monitoring, it was determined that Mahkosi was so small that she was unable to suckle from the mother and without human intervention would not survive if left in the wild.

On route to the orphanage, the team stopped at a garage and were approached by the Zulu Royal family who expressed interest in the calf  (we were busy setting up drips and trying to stabilize her condition in the back of our vets vehicle). Queen Zwelethini named and blessed Makhosi (indicating leader or Royalty in the Zulu language) in the name of the Zulu Royal family.

Isomiso

Species: white rhino

Gender: male

Born: early 2017

Isomiso was the victim of the drought in South Africa. The word Isomiso means drought in the Zulu language. Isomiso was admitted in a critical condition as a tiny 3 month old calf (he was the size of a 2month old calf), found collapsed, emaciated, severely dehydrated and heavily tick infested. During the first 24 hours of intensive nursing, it became apparent that Isomiso had lost his sight. Thankfully, after much love, care and attention Isomiso's sight returned.

Ntoto

Species: white rhino

Gender: male

Born: mid 2017

In the late afternoon on the 15th May a white rhino cow had been poached from a game reserve in Mpumalanga. She had left behind a young 4.5 month calf – and they called on the vet to come and capture him. Ntoto had been on his own in the bush for 6 days before we successfully captured him on the 16th May.

He was a strong feisty little boy and he had done an excellent job in looking after himself in the wild – surviving on only water and nibbling on grass - but due to his age he was in desperate need of milk and nutrition, and his stomach was constipated due to him having to digest only solids.
