Holiday Hope for Rhinos

Monday 11 December 2023

Thanks to your incredible support during these past 12 months 2023 was a year of hope for rhinos, but our work continues.

During December we'll be hearing from our project-partners on the ground how your support has directly helped rhinos this year and what we hope to achieve in 2024.

We're incredibly grateful for the support that you have given us in 2023 and very proud of how that support has been channelled into tangible results for rhinos, but as ever there is more to do. Please consider donating to our Christmas Campaign and help us create Holiday Hope for Rhinos.

Rhino Poaching
On the downside the scourge of rhino poaching has continued predominantly within South Africa, and the global hotspot for this horrific trade is now focused on KwaZulu-Natal, meaning that our team at the Zululand Rhino Orphanage have been caring for more orphans than ever before. At the same time our partners at Ol Pejeta in Kenya are celebrating SIX YEARS with zero rhinos lost to poaching.

Anti-Poaching Efforts
Our own anti-poaching efforts are bringing results, with only three rhinos lost in our areas of operation in the past three years. A combination of boots on the ground, Eyes in the Sky, cutting edge technology and community involvement are paying dividends.

This year thanks to Helping Rhinos funding a new team of Black Mambas was formed; the Crime Prevention Unit. These specially trained female rangers are working to identify wildlife crime before it happens and thereby support the work of their counterparts on patrol.

Our Eyes in the Sky programme in the Eastern Cape is helping to protect greater swathes of habitat, and support from YOU has meant that our pilot Siseko Mayinje can spend more valuable hours in the air, both in the anti-poaching plane and piloting the drone.

Wildlife vet Dr William Fowlds has successfully fitted the last of 53 tracking collars, funded by our 40 Collars for 40 Rhinos Campaign, ensuring rhino rangers can monitor their charges safely and more effectively than ever.

Population Increases
Africa's southern white and black rhino populations have both increased for the first time in over 10 years. Our partners at Ol Pejeta continue to  protect the largest population of Eastern black rhino in the world, whilst our partners at Kariega Game Reserve in South Africa's Eastern Cape have seen the return of black rhino to habitats they had been absent from for generations, thanks in large part to a habitat expansion that YOU helped make a reality.

Despite the population increase there are still just 27,000 rhinos left in the world. Less than a century ago there were over 500,000 rhinos roaming the planet, so while it is important we acknowledge the successes of the past year, this is no time to rest.
